Gold had no talent as a trainer at first and tried really hard to act cool. He was trying to catch a Teddiursa with one of old man Kurt's special Pokéballs for his granddaughter. For some reason, he thought it was a smart idea to bring this little girl all the way up to an extremely dangerous mountain with a bunch of angry Ursaring.

[He's annoyed just thinking of Gold back then. Jeez...]

I was up there chasing after my buddy Ursaring. Gold decided to turn it into a competition, even though it was never what he was up there for in the first place. He wanted to look cool or something. Changed his tune real quick when we were almost clawed off a cliff.
